The Coat

Inspired by Chekhov's story "In the Dark"

Hello, I'm a coat, not just any coat, I'm a fireman's coat. I'm always exposed to fire, they take care of me because I'm expensive.

What I enjoy most is when we come into the kitchen, through the window, that's where the cook sleeps, she's my owner's love, we arrive and he hangs me on the coat rack. Even though I don't see them, I hear them, in their loving cuddles, and I'm happy for them but I'm always afraid they'll be discovered and I'll be thrown out the window and won't be able to defend myself, to tell them it's not my fault.

That night the master of the house arrived, sent by his wife. He came into the kitchen, I was trembling, luckily it was dark and he hadn't brought a candle (in those days there was no electricity), lucky for me and my owner.

The cook, very cleverly, acted offended, "Sir, how could I receive a man in your house, you insult me, I'm a decent woman." I was laughing to myself thinking what a great actress and picturing my owner hidden under the sheets.

The master ended up apologizing to her. Then he asked about the coat, which she was supposed to shake out and take to the bedroom. "On the coat rack, sir, I forgot to take it."

A chill ran through me even though I'm warm, I was on top of the other coat. I felt myself being taken down and the master put me over his shoulders, which weren't my fireman's shoulders. That's how I got to the bedroom, the master lit the candle, the lady, on seeing me, let out such a scream that I fainted.

When I woke up I was lying in the snow and I never saw my fireman again.
