Roby and me

…don't peek
…don't peek

«No cheating, you peeked, I'm mad!». Nina is five years old. Roby is the family robot: he shakes his head no.

«Fine, now it's your turn, but don't peek.» Roby lowers his metal eyelids over his red eyes. Nina hides. A few minutes pass, Roby opens his eyes and pretends to search for her… he's already seen her among the plants, in her little pink dress.

«I beat you again, now give me a piggyback ride!» Roby shakes his head no. «I'll cry if you don't carry me.» Roby lifts her up, sets her on his shoulders, she wraps her arms around his neck.

The mother's shouts interrupt the game. She scolds Roby, Nina cries: «It's not his fault!».

That night the parents argue. The mother thinks Roby should be taken out of the house: the little girl loves him more than them, he keeps the other kids away, and around the neighborhood everyone talks about the girl being raised by a robot. In the end she convinces the father. They hand the robot back to the factory.

To console her they bring her a puppy, but she searches for her friend all through the house. She stops eating, doesn't smile, is sad, doesn't play. The desperate parents decide to take her to the factory so she can see that robots are built out of parts, cables…

As they tour the factory they reach a section where a group of robots assembles other robots. The place is roped off with a sign: «Do not enter — hazardous area». Nina recognizes Roby there and slips under the ropes.

He recognized her
He recognized her

A huge robot moves forward carrying material; the parents already picture their daughter crushed. But Roby recognized Nina: he lunges, lifts her into his arms and manages to stop his fellow robot. Nina wraps her arms around his neck and laughs, happy at the reunion.

The parents decide to take Roby home again, until time takes him apart… or their daughter can be happy with just the memory.
